The Spark
Metarficial was founded in 2021, during the height of the metaverse boom, with a clear mission: to provide accurate and research-driven information on virtual reality. We aim to empower understanding of immersive technologies, using research as the foundation for every insight we share. Our goal is to help our audience make informed decisions and shape the future of digital environments.
Our Story
In October 2021, Facebook rebranded as Meta, signaling its long-term commitment to building the metaverse. While this was a welcome development for VR communities and the broader ecosystem, it was not without its downsides.
In the wake of this tectonic shift, a metaverse bubble and hype cycle erupted, flooding mainstream media with bold promises, stirring expectations, exaggerated claims, and superficial information about extended reality technologies (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality).
Amid this noise, the Metarficial story began with a webinar—an exposition on the trends and opportunities of virtual reality and the metaverse that sparked a chain reaction in our hearts and minds.
What started as curiosity soon grew into conviction. We immersed ourselves in conversations and research exploring the past, present, and future of immersive technologies. Inspiration transformed into vision, and Metarficial began to take shape.
By December, we launched Metarficial, fully committed to our mission: to become the leading source of accurate, research-driven information on extended reality. We strive to cut through hype and deliver reliable clarity and depth.
In the years that followed, we stayed true to this mission, setting a benchmark as a research-first media platform in the XR landscape, prioritizing quality over speculation. Throughout our work, we have been cited in numerous academic journals, textbooks, and respected media outlets.
These acknowledgments serve as affirmations of our work, encouraging us to continue expanding our platform and reach.
